BALLAST
FreightCar America has developed a robust ballast car design equipped with a state-of-the-art door system which provides additional productivity and operator safety during the unloading process. The 110-ton-capacity car features manual or optional electro-hydraulic door operation. The electro-hydraulic door system can be operated manually or by remote control. Solar panels are used to maintain the charge of the onboard battery pack used to operate the system. Our ballast car features all steel or steel stainless combination, riveted and mechanically fastened construction, four outlet gates and the FCA-patented cold-rolled 70 ksi yield, steel center sill. Ballast cars can be created from virtually any standard draft gear donor car.
