FreightCar America has developed a robust ballast car design equipped with a state-of-the-art door system which provides additional productivity and operator safety during the unloading process. The 110-ton capacity car features manual or optional electro-hydraulic door operation. The electro-hydraulic door system can be operated manually or by remote control. Solar panels are used to maintain the charge of the on-board battery pack, used to operate the system. Our ballast car features all steel or steel-stainless combination, riveted and mechanically fastened construction, four outlet gates and the FCA-patented cold-rolled 70ksi yield steel center sill. Ballast cars can be created from virtually any standard draft gear donor car.
